One Florida business is playing an active role in educating and building awareness on the importance of providing shade for children. SKYShades has donated shade structures to Millennia Elementary in Orlando and Lyman High School in Longwood.

Robert Black, Assistant Principal at Lyman High School, was very appreciative for the donation. "Not only is it extremely serviceable, but this structure looks fantastic," he said.

SKYShades, with its corporate headquarters in Orlando, has helped many schools design and construct custom shade structures to protect their students from the scourge of skin cancer. "Our mission at SKYShades is to do all we can to increase awareness as well as promote prevention through the use of shade," said Joe McKenna, SKYShades' Executive Vice President.

Children between the ages of 2-4 are particularly vulnerable, and with solar radiation most intense from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. - the precise hours when children and school personnel are on campus and likely to be outdoors for physical education classes, lunch or recess - all education and child care facilities need to take a more proactive stance in helping to curb this epidemic.

In Australia, for example, it is compulsory that all education facilities to provide shade for their students. It is SKYShades' recommendation that the lawmakers in the United States adopt similar legislation, especially considering melanoma is the only cancer that continues to afflict more and more people each year.
